Story from The Molokai Dispatch

Molokai Mana`o

With the economic uncertainties facing Molokai, I went to the Kula Ki`e Ki`e Hawaiian Language Immersion School at Molokai High to ask the students to play Friendly Isle planners. This is their mana`o on what creative businesses and ideas they believe would best benefit Molokai.

Loa`a nui na mea au e makemake ai e `ike. Makemake au e `ike no `aina ho`opulapula no na po`e Hawaii no ka mea ke ho`emi nei na home no na po`e Hawaii. Ina loa`a hiki no honauna e hiki mai ana e loa`a ka home no no `ohana. Pono e malama na po`e Hawaii.

What I would like to see is more homesteads for the Hawaiian people of Molokai. I would like to see this so the Hawaiian people can have a home for their families and for future generations. We really need to care for no po`e o Hawaii.

Ma ka `aina kaulana `o Molokai makemake wau e `ike I kekahi mau hana no na po`e ihepa, e like me kekahi wahi pa`ani a i`ole kekahi wahi malama mo lakou wale no. Hiki a lakou ke hana i ka lakou makemake a kekahi wahi a`ole hiki i na po`e e a`e ke ho`ohenehene ia lakou. Makemake pu waue `ike ia Molokai me keia me na ho`ololi `ole aka me na po`e `o Molokai e wehe ana i ko lakou mau hana pakahi me ko lakou mau kalena maika`i.

I would like to see a comfortable place or center for the Molokai disabled where they could just go land be around people who understand with no worries and where they could just be themselves. I would also want to see Molokai stay the same, but just with Molokai residents running and opening their own businesses because Molokai residents have a lot of good talents. They could use their talents to make money.

Ko`u manalo makemake wau ia kakou e ho`i ka malama i ka `aina. Hookanu hou na mea kanu a hooulu ka ulula`au. Pono kekahi mea lai pake malane`i, a he kokua keia no na po`e hou e ha`awi ia kakou i ko lakou mau kala.

I would like more people giving back to the island by rebuilding our fish ponds and replanting native plants to extend our forest and create more greenery for our island. And a restaurant with Chinese food would be a big help and our community and new-comers can give more money to our businesses.
