The Nicholas Times

Pretty close. Though many did not care for the cartoon, most of you enjoyed our political commentary of media control on Molokai.

It’s true that there are some personalities who show up often in the pages of local newspapers. These people become empowered because their ideas are communicated to the masses.

It was particularly alarming to us that the Molokai Times had given Peter Nicholas, the CEO for Molokai Ranch, over 2,000 words of editorial space. This is beyond a healthy dose of empowerment.

Nicholas is foreign businessman whose job is to make as much money from Molokai property as possible. Molokai Ranch’s parent company GUOCO is a multibillion dollar corporation – surely they have enough empowerment without usurping the local media.

If perpetuating Molokai’s unique cultural legacy is the goal, empowering our local leaders and community members is of the utmost importance. Anyone intent on providing news to the people of Molokai needs to remember - Molokai and its people come first.
