Doris Masaye Reed, 82, born in Kamalo, Molokai, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Dec. 6, 2025.
Doris lived a life full of adventure and aloha. Alongside her beloved husband Richard, she sailed around the world aboard Satan’s Doll with their faithful dogs, exploring new cultures, savoring incredible food, and making lifelong friends. She loved reading, tending to her plants, and writing about their travels.
From slinging drinks to baking her legendary macadamia nut pies, Doris had a gift for making every gathering special. She cherished R&R Tuesdays, lunch with her friends, and her daughter Carol’s cooking. Her warmth, laughter and love of Hawaiian music made every moment brighter.…

Applications for the popular Agricultural Micro Grant Program 6.0 – which offers up to $25,000 to Maui County small farmers and ranchers – are being accepted since Jan. 15 by Maui Economic Opportunity.
The application period runs through Sunday, Feb. 15.
The $3 million Maui County-funded program is open to select startup and currently operating farms on less than 12 acres and livestock ranches up to 40 acres possessing a county business or state General Excise Tax License as of July 1, 2025.
Preference will be given to women and Native Hawaiians. A limited number of grants will be allocated to lei-making flower farms.…

As part of Maui Economic Development Board’s STEMworks program, which runs the STEMworks AFTERschool program at eight Maui County elementary and middle schools, Maunaloa Elementary offered a hands-on STEM Day Jan. 8 to kick off the spring 2026 semester.
The event was the first all-day STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) event the school has hosted, giving West Molokai’s keiki hands-on experience with the latest STEM education technology and inspiring them to continue studying STEM in middle and high school.
The event featured five sessions led by STEM experts from all across the state for the 67 participating K-6 students. …

The descendants of Josiah Lanakila “Black” Hoohuli Sr. honor our beloved makuakāne, who departed this life on Nov. 9, 2025, in his 86th year, at Moanalua, Oahu. Born Dec. 30, 1938 at Nānākuli, Oahu, he was the fourth son of Joseph Kahapea Paʻahao and Kulani (Lima) Hoohuli. Of chiefly, priestly and warrior ancestry, he was the last of his generation, all seven brothers and seven sisters now gathered to Ke Akua in Heaven. He wed his one true love, Velma Lou Leinaala “Leina” Adams, on Aug. 17, 1963 at Nānākuli. Together for 39 years, they lovingly raised our ʻohana until her passing in 2002.…
